Newman Futures warmly welcomes today’s announcement of a $45 million investment in Pilbara housing through the Western Australian Government’s Resources Community Investment Initiative (RCII). The funding will deliver more homes in remote Aboriginal communities and affordable accommodation for essential workers in East Newman.
Announced by the Cook Labor Government with BHP, the package includes:
- $30 million for new homes in remote communities across the region, with Traditional Owners involved throughout design, planning and delivery.
- $15 million to convert up to 40 vacant BHP-owned houses in East Newman into affordable accommodation for essential workers including: childcare, retail and hospitality workers who aren’t eligible for Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH).
Both have been long advocated for by Newman stakeholders and through the Newman Futures project. They speak directly to priorities our community has championed for years: secure, appropriate housing as the foundation for Strong Culture, Strong Families and a thriving town.
The investment will help revitalise East Newman and create greater certainty for essential services in Newman.
The new commitment forms part of a wider RCII program that has now directed $427 million towards regional priorities across the Pilbara.
This is real momentum for East Newman and the wider region and there’s more to come.
