Celebrating Five Years of Newman Futures

Over the past five years, local organisations, businesses, and community members have united under the banner of Newman Futures to drive positive, sustainable change, all with the shared vision of building a sustainable and diverse economy that is inclusive to all.

What began as a conversation about collaboration in Newman has flourished into a powerful  common agenda with more than 80 organisations working together to co-create 26 priority projects and initiatives. These efforts have enhanced health, education, employment, and overall liveability in Newman.

In March, 46 stakeholders came together to celebrate these collective achievements with a breakfast at Mia Mia, reflecting on the meaningful actions that have driven change in the Newman community.

In celebrating the achievements of Newman Futures, a number of people spoke about how working together, on a variety of different projects, has bettered the way agencies work in the same space in Newman.

Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporations new Chairperson Michael Stream and vice-chairperson Christina Stone opened the proceedings via video with a special message about working together for Newman.

This was followed by Melvin Farmer, a valued adviser to Newman Futures since its inception. Melvin’s insights have been instrumental to the project, particularly in the development of the Cultural Compact.

We invited the following representatives to speak on behalf of their organisations about their involvement in the Newman Futures project and working together; Cate Ballantyne, CEO of Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation (KNAC); Arina Aoina, CEO of Newman Women’s Shelter; Robby Chibawe, CEO of Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service; and Tristan Cole, General Manager of Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa.

The celebration provided local organisations with an opportunity to reconnect, reflect, and celebrate the amazing achievements resulting from their collaboration over the last five years.

Newman Futures is supported by BHP and will continue bringing the community together to create positive outcomes locally. To find out how you can be involved please contact info@newmanfutures.com.au
