Newman and the East Pilbara have changed dramatically in little more than 50 years since the discovery of the region’s rich iron ore deposits.
The future is just as exciting as innovation and technology change the nature of work. This is where Newman Futures is focusing its energy.
The project, initiated by BHP and the Shire of East Pilbara in January 2019, aims to explore how innovation and new technologies can be harnessed to build a secure and prosperous future for everyone in our community.
Change is already happening. This new era of technology has been dubbed Industry 4.0, shorthand for the fourth industrial revolution, where digital, physical and biological worlds come together in new ways. Robotics and automation, artificial intelligence, bio-technology, virtual reality and the incorporation of the internet into more devices in our everyday lives are all part of this revolution in how we live and work.
Newman Futures recognises that we need to find new ways of working together as a community as we embrace and adapt to these changes.
Four pathways underpinning this new way of thinking have been identified by the Newman community. See below for the key objectives of each pathway. Each objective also contains a range of actions that the community has identified to achieve these outcomes.

The Newman Futures project launches officially in November, and there’s still time to get involved. We’re looking for expressions of interest from individuals and groups to join the Newman Futures Network to help guide this project as we set up our community for the future.
