We’d like to thank the collective efforts of our partners for another successful year of creating lasting, positive impacts in the Newman community! With the support of BHP, Newman Futures continues to connect local people and organisations to create better outcomes for the whole community.
2024 marked a new era for the East Newman Revitalisation Project, with the Western Australian Planning Commission approving the East Newman Precinct Structure Plan in January 2024, paving the way for work to begin in bringing Nyiyaparli and Martu’s vision for Strong Culture and Strong Family to fruition.
The East Newman Precinct Structure Plan (ENPSP) was approved in full by the Western Australia Planning Commission in January, marking the beginning of a new chapter for East Newman.
KNAC, JYAC and PAMS, Creating Communities and BHP were awarded the Planning with Country award for the ENPSP at the Planning Institute of Australia’s National Awards for Excellence, accepting the award in Melbourne.
Minister for Planning; Lands; Housing; Homelessness John Carey met with KNAC, JYAC and BHP to tour the proposed site of the Community Service Centre and Central Park and the wider East Newman Revitalisation project.
The East Newman Revitalisation Project moved into implementation, with work well underway to increase housing supply, improve public amenity and create a thriving East Newman for Strong Culture and Strong Family.
Progress has already commenced on the Nyiyaparli and Martu Short Stay Accommodation and the Community Service Centre, which will create a central hub for local organisations and service providers in East Newman.
Newman Futures has continued to work alongside local organisations to create positive, sustainable impact together. In 2024 we saw local organisations continue to collaborate to make good things happen in Newman.
In February, Newman Futures undertook a community survey to better understand life in Newman.
The survey revealed that locals enjoy a strong sense of community in Newman because of its friendly vibe and natural beauty.
The survey also revealed that residents would like to see more activities for families, and better services and facilities. The feedback collected in this survey will inform the next phase of the Newman Futures project.
KNAC was proud to join the WA Cricket Foundation as a Community Partner to create more opportunities for young people in Newman to thrive, while maintaining strong connections to Country and culture.
The West Coast Eagles and Royal Life Saving WA’s Talent Pool Academy have partnered to train and mentor two youth leaders to assist with the delivery of local programs.
Supported by The Y and BHP, West Coast Eagles and Talent Pool are making waves in Newman by building resilience, healthy lifestyles and leadership among young people.
The Nyiyaparli Living Language Project (NLLP), an initiative powered by Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation, is an innovative three-year program of language capture and revitalisation projects with one clear goal – to keep Nyiyaparli language alive forever.
With fewer than ten fluent language speakers remaining, KNAC recognises that with the increasing age of many senior speakers, there is a critical urgency to capture their knowledge and protect the language for future generations.
As proud signatories of the This is Our Dream Cultural Compact, West Coast Eagles renamed the East Pilbara Cup to the Warlawuurru Cup, in a powerful acknowledgement of Martu language. Warlawuurru translates to ‘Eagle’ in Martu language, and the name change signifies WCE’s commitment to walking alongside Nyiyaparli and Martu in Newman.
The Newman Futures team also got arty and joined in the community painting workshop with the Shire of East Pilbara, beautifying two laneways in East Newman.
Newman Futures continued to support Newman Women’s Shelter and Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa to deliver Food in the Park. Creating a friendly, community space Food in the Park aims to provide healthy, nutritious meals to local residents who can come for a feed and a chat, while also offering food delivery to East Newman homes.
We’re not sure who had more fun at the Shire of East Pilbara’s for water play activation in East Newman.
The Newman Futures team helped deliver a number of water-based games and activities, which certainly helped everyone cool off in the warm weather!
Newman Futures has been working alongside local organisations and stakeholders throughout 2024 on local priorities for collaboration.
We look forward to working together again in 2025 to continue exploring new opportunities to achieve sustainable, positive impact together.
