East Newman Precinct Structure Plan moves to implementation phase

One of the priority projects identified from the inception of Newman Futures has been the revitalisation of East Newman.

The ENPSP is designed to revitalise East Newman through culturally appropriate planning, reflecting the aspirations of Nyiyaparli and Martu people, and incorporating key components that address healthcare, housing, education, and cultural wellbeing.

Minister Carey met with KNAC Chairperson Keith Hall and CEO Cate Ballantyne, JYAC Director Murphy Williams and Interim CEO Rewi Lyall and Creating Communities to discuss the ongoing development of the East Newman Precinct Structure Plan (ENPSP).

The group toured the proposed site for the new Community Service Centre and Central Park, which form key elements of the East Newman Revitalisation Project, an initiative driven by Newman Futures.

“Great to get out to Newman today to speak with locals about our investment in housing development, land supply, and revitalising our regional communities.”

“Thanks to members of Jamakurnu Yapalikurnu Aboriginal Corporation, Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation, Creating Communities, and BHP for meeting with me in East Newman about the new East Newman Precinct Structure Plan.”

“The East Newman Precinct Structure Plan is set to upgrade the community facilities and amenities, increasing housing options, improved liveability, and public open spaces,” said Minister Carey.

The next phase of the project intends to deliver a community service centre, providing a central hub for local services, alternative education spaces, a café, and communal areas for community gatherings. Additionally, short-stay accommodation is proposed for KNAC and JYAC to support ranger and cultural heritage work, as well as for PAMS to assist families receiving medical treatment, particularly dialysis.

The ENPSP was approved by the Western Australian Planning Commission in January 2024 and has been recognised for its innovation, receiving both state and national accolades at the 2023 Awards for Planning Excellence in the ‘Planning with Country’ category.
