Women from across the Newman community came together on Wednesday to celebrate each other and their successes on International Women’s Day.
The breakfast, hosted by the Newman Women’s Shelter, a service that provides a safe space for women and children experiencing family and domestic violence, aimed to bring the community together to celebrate the women of Newman.
This year, United Nations International Women’s Day theme was DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.
The theme is particularly fitting with the goals of the Newman Futures project, which aims to build a diverse and sustainable economy which is inclusive to all.
Since the Newman Futures project started, a large emphasis has been placed on education, specifically in STEM-related areas, ensuring all members of the community have opportunities in an industry that will see new technology and automation as it diversifies and grows.
Ensuring women, in particular young women, are engaging in these education opportunities is of great importance in ensuring everyone, no matter their gender or background, is prepared for the opportunities of the future of work.
International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the continued efforts of women in the community who are paving the way for future generations.
