Innovation and technology are changing the way we live and work. BHP is working closely with the Shire of East Pilbara and the Newman community to understand and harness these opportunities, and to generate a vision of what the future of work, training and life will look like in Newman.

Focus Area: Aboriginal-led Decision Making

There is cultural recognition and responsiveness by all businesses, agencies and society in Newman and the remote communities
Increase cultural awareness and competency across the community
  • Engage with local organisations to increase signatories of the Cultural Compact
  • Deliver town-wide cultural awareness programming focused on businesses, visitors and community
Service providers have a high level of cultural competency and strong relationships in the community
  • Establish an approach to ensure Aboriginal voices are at the table and part of the decision-making processes
  • Establish an approach to support key workers to build relationships and trust in the community
  • Increase Aboriginal Organisations service provision in East Newman
Nyiyaparli and Martu voices are embedded in local decision making
Support Nyiyaparli and Martu leaders to participate in Newman Futures decision-making
  • Coordinate with Prescribed Body Corporates, Aboriginal Organisations and community members for input into strategy and project concepts
  • Advocate for Nyiyaparli and Martu representation on decision-making functions in Newman

  • Deliver a plan to implement Phase 2b and 3 of the East Newman Revitalisation Project by 2034
Deliver community facilities to increase access to services for individuals and families
  • Scope, secure funding and implement the Wellness Space at Arika Place
  • Implement Orange Sky services at the Wellness Space at Arika Place
  • Scope, secure funding and implement the Community Service Centre
  • Secure funding and implement the Nyiyaparli and Martu Short Stay Accommodation
