Support Your Economy

Keeping it local may be the path to economic recovery for Newman businesses and residents.

In June, Newman Futures hosted the Stronger Business Futures event at the Parnawarri Retail Centre which covered all things local business, with presentations, information and Q&As on how together, we can work to grow a vibrant economy in Newman.

“As a company, BHP is highly invested in this town, which means we are highly invested in the wellbeing of people, and the success of local businesses” Marie Bourgoin, General Manager for BHP’s Newman Operations, said. “And as a matter of fact, it was local businesses and residents who filled some critical roles for our business at the peak of the pandemic.”

In addition, Newman Futures has also launched a new ‘Supporting Your Economy’ page on the Newman Futures Community Board to support local businesses by encouraging local people to buy-local to revitalise the economy and keep jobs in the town. The Shire of East Pilbara, BHP, C-Res and the Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry continue their work to support the local economy, and each have an array of information and support available on the Newman Futures Community Board about their programs and initiatives.

The Shire of East Pilbara

The Shire of East Pilbara is contributing $50,000 to its East Pilbara Dollars project to buy gift cards and vouchers from participating businesses to distribute to the community. The program will offer a great incentive to buy local and help local traders recover from the downturn with some immediate cashflow.

BHP and C-Res

BHP and C-Res support small business through the Local Buying Program. The program aims to make it easier for businesses with less than 20 full-time employees to bid for supply opportunities with BHP. It also covers recognised Aboriginal Traditional Owner enterprises.

Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry is continuing its support to business through a range of workshops and one-on-one support to business.
