Families and young people showed their enthusiasm for exploring the latest in technology with a big turnout for the Newman Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s first Innovation Family Day.
The event, in the Newman Recreation Centre gyms on Saturday, February 22, drew about 600 people. There was a line of families waiting to get in at 9am, and the STEM showbags handed out to the first 250 children were all gone by 10.30am.
The chance to experience virtual reality technology was one of the most popular activities for children while people of all ages were keen to try on BHP’s exoskeleton suit which enables the wearer to lift and manipulate heavy weights.
Monadelphous’ robotic car and Scitech games were also popular throughout the day.
The day was run as part of an innovation partnership between the chamber and BHP, in conjunction with the Welcome to Newman initiative.
The chamber was impressed with the public response and hopes to make it an annual event.
